Air Filters for Virginia Beach Homeowners

When your furnace or air conditioner kicks on, air moves through your ductwork, providing heated or cooled air to your entire home. Through this process, the air picks up dust, pet dander, pollen, and other debris, which it re-circulates through your home. All HVAC systems have an air filter that traps some of these contaminants, stopping this cycle and preventing the allergens from continuing to circulate through your home.

At Mechanical Service Company, we believe that air filters are a vital part of your HVAC system. The quality of your air filter ensures your indoor air quality is as good as it can be. That’s why we want you to use the right air filter and change it regularly as you work to protect your Southside Hampton Roads home.

Types of Air Filters

Keeping the air in your house clean requires a good air filter. The three main types of air filters are:

  • Fiberglass filters. Fiberglass filters are the most common type. They feature fiberglass fibers layered over one another and reinforced with a grating. These filters are typically removed and thrown out when it’s time to change them.
  • Polyester and pleated filters. These have a similar design to fiberglass filters but with better ability to trap dust. They’re a little more costly than fiberglass, but do the job a little better.
  • HEPA filters. HEPA stands for high efficiency particulate arrestance, and these filters pass air through a very fine scale to remove 99.97 percent of particles 0.3 microns or larger. These are one of the highest efficiency options available. Of course, they can also be the most expensive.

Which one is right for you? The answer will depend on your furnace or air cleaner type, your budget, and your home’s needs. It’s also important that the filter properly fits your HVAC system, or you could damage it. MSCO can help you select the air filtration products that will keep your family breathing freely.

When to Change Your Filter

Your air filter will help cleanse your home’s air, but it does so by grabbing particles from the air. Over time the filter will get dirty, and you could end up losing efficiency as the air struggles to move through the system. If you don’t change the filter, eventually it will become clogged and you will risk damaging your system. Plan to change your filter at least every other month, but you may need to do it more frequently depending on the overall air quality in your home and the type of filter you’re using.

If you’re not sure how often to change your filter, contact MSCO for expert guidance. We can help you protect your system and change your air filter with the right frequency for your home.
